Released a month before Hispanic Heritage Month, Renzo Del Castillo’s “Still” is a collection of poems that reflects an all-too relatable tale for all immigrants.

After migrating to Florida from Peru as a child, Del Castillo built a life in a new country with a foundation forged in his native land, caught in the space between cultures. This led him to write “Still” [Indie Earth Publishing, $24.99], an exploration of the immigrant experience through reflections of memory and transition, an adaptation to new cultures and geographies through the ethnographic lens of Miami. His story, told in verse, is that of many immigrants.

“Still” is a collection of poems that focuses on the immigrant experience: a family’s journey from Lima, Peru to Miami, Florida as political refugees and asylum seekers and the impact that had on the life of a boy as he grew into a man.

“We left Peru when I was five because my family had received death threats from a terrorist organization. We went from being comfortable to starting from zero. I knew I would have to adapt to make a life worth living,” says Del Castillo.

As we enter National Hispanic Heritage Month, Still provides a read that is as timely as it is pertinent. With poems in three languages, the book looks to bridge the divide between cultures, highlighting Hispanics’ shared experience in his poetry. When the reader finds something to relate to in these pages, a dialogue starts and shows people aren’t that different underneath it all.

That heritage of terror and exile that sometimes underlies these poems gives them a sense of history within the lyric confusions of a single life. There is an intimate tone, used to remind the reader that imagination triumphs over, or sometimes through, adversity. “Still” was released July 30, 2023, and is available wherever books are sold (ISBN: 979-8988037996).

Renzo Del Castillo holds a B.A. in English from University of Florida, specializing in Victorian Literature, and an M.A. in Mass Communications, specializing in Intercultural Communications. The Motor Enclave (TME) unveiled Tampa Bay’s newest mural today, on the I-75 side of its 37,000 square foot Event Center just North of the I-4 interchange. The mural was designed and executed by prominent Philadelphia-based muralist Glossblack. Branded as the “Motomural,” the nearly 5,000 square foot mural is destined to become a landmark at this main interchange to Tampa and Orlando that sees over 142,000 vehicles a day.

The Motor Enclave founder, Brad Oleshansky, collaborated with Glossblack closely on the project, keeping it under wraps until painting began on September 1st. The mural features a combination of motorsports-themed iconography, vintage roadside references and a few related to Tampa history and culture.

“The goal of this mural is to pay homage to many things at once; The Motor Enclave branding, classic Americana, motorsports, patina & graffiti elements, and of course a nod to Tampa. It’s a ‘favorite things’ mural for TME that speaks to how unique they are,” said Jimmy McMenamin of Glossblack. “Much of my artwork revolves around balancing color while creating building blocks that tell a larger story. I love all things typography, vintage signage, neon lettering, dynamic shadow/lighting, and retro Americana. For that reason, working with TME was the perfect fit.”

“I am thrilled to have this piece of the project come to fruition. It’s been a fun process working with Glossblack to make this project come to life,” said Oleshansky. “It’s been just as fun keeping the artwork a surprise for my team here at TME. But the wait is finally over and what better way to show off our soon-to-open Event Center.”

The Motomural is now visible for all to see on the West side of I-75 just North of the I-4 interchange.
